The Junior Coaching Programme

The Junior Coaching programme is aimed at young athletes between the ages of 9 to 13.

The club policy is that athletes in this age group should take part in all event groups as there are benefits to be gained from undertaking activities in the different event groups as well as these athletes being too young to make decisions about their athletic futures. However, the club respects freedom of choice and it is possible for an athlete in this age group to concentrate on one event group if they so choose by joining the later training group.

The coaching programme aims to provide athletes with opportunities to develop athletically in a stimulating way and consists of activities and games where new skills and knowledge are gained in a ‘fun' way. It also aims to allow the athletes to develop socially by developing team spirit as well as providing a place where the athletes can enjoy friendships with other athletes.

This facilitated by athletes being coached in groups corresponding to their school year group - these are:

                                                          Year            Age

5                 9-10

6                 10-11

7                 11-12

8                 12-13

Each group rotates through the 4 event groups in a 2 week cycle. For example, the Year 5 Group may undertake a 2 week programme consisting of:

                                      Week 1                  Tuesday                Jumps

                                                                   Thursday               Endurance

                                      Week 2                  Tuesday                Throws

                                                                   Thursday               Speed

The Head Coaches are responsible for the activities undertaken and the coaches in their event group.
