On Sunday 10th June the Harrrier's Mens Team travelled to Portsmouth for the preliminary regional round of the British Athletic League Jubilee Cup Competition. This is 'knock out' type of competition with a restricted range of athletic events requiring a smaller group of athletes.. In this competition British League Clubs and non-BAL clubs (Exeter Harriers) go 'head to head'.
We had a great match finishing just one point behind a British League Club - Team Southampton. The other clubs trailed a long way behind. As a result The Harriers now march on to the regional semi-finals at Eton (Windsor) which take place on Sunday 22nd July.
Out of the 11 events the Harriers had 5 firsts, 5 seconds & 1 fourth.
The individual results:
110 metres hurdles Glen Etherington 2nd 15.6 secs
100 metres Dan Buss 1st 11.3 secs
200 metres Rich Derrick 2nd 23.7 secs
400 metres Phil Almond 2nd 51.1 secs
800 metres Simon Minting 1st 1 min 58.4 secs
1500 metres Simon Rusbridge 2nd 4mins 7.8 secs
Javelin Matt Smith 1st 57.44 metres
Shot Dave Dawson 1st 14.34 metres
Long Jump Simon Lewis 2nd 5.92 metres
High Jump Tom Elworthy 4th 1.80 metres
Medley Relay (400,200,200,400) Phil Almond, Rich Derrick, Dan Buss, Simon Minting 1st 2 mins 27.9 secs.
This match was the first time we went 'eye balls to eyeballs' with a British League Club. The result augurs well for our ambitions of getting into the British League sooner rather than later.
